Costa Rica is considered one of the 20 countries with greatest biodiversity in the world. Its geographical location (between two oceans and two large masses) and its mountain system, provide numerous and varied microclimates. These are some of the reasons for this natural abundance, in terms of species and ecosystems.
Visitors can find 12,000 plant species, about 237 species of mammals, nearly 200 kinds of amphibians and 220 species of reptiles. There are also over 850 species of birds and 1,800 orchids.
It has an area of approximately 51,100 square kilometers. And is divided in 7 provinces: San José, Heredia, Alajuela, Cartago, Limón, Puntarenas and Guanacaste, each one representing a diversity of ecosystems and cultures.
Among the most important areas in Costa Rica can find the following:
Central Valley
Its main town is San Jose, capital of the country, offers visitors a variety of activities and an abundance of nightlife, with a lot of discs, bars, casinos, fine restaurants, shops. You can also visit museums of history, art, theaters. Nearby is the city of Carthage where you can see architectural ruins and the Basilica of Los Angeles, shrine of the patron saint of Costa Rica.
This area has two seasons. The dry season runs from December to May and the rainy season, from August to October, which are heavy rainfall. The average annual temperature is 20 º C and may fall to 10 degrees Celsius in the highlands.
North Zone
In Costa Rica one of the main attractions is the Arenal volcano, a perfect cone of 1,633 meters of altitude in constant activity, which offers its visitors a spectacular eruptions of fire with rock and lava. At your feet lies Lake Arenal with 87 kilometers in length, characterized by its scenic beauty and as one of the best destinations in the world to practice windsurfing, with winds reaching 72 kilometers per hour. Arenal
The Arenal Volcano is located 7 kms from Fortuna area is 33 square kilometers, has been in constant activity since July 29, 1968, has two different landscapes covered with a lush vegetation that is home to a diversity of wildlife and a rugged area of lava and sand result of the constant eruptions. It is considered the main attraction of the area and the observation is both day and night because of the possibility of enjoying some of their constant explosions and eruptions. Caño Negro

South Pacific

The region extends from the river Baru, to the border with Panama, and from the Cordillera de Talamanca up the Pacific coast.
The weather is hot and humid on the coast, the plains and valleys. In the highest areas, dominated given the cloudy cool conditions caused by the altitude. The rainy season runs from April to December, while the dry season is between February and April.

Caribbean

The cities were erected in the river valleys Pacuare, Star, and Reventazón Parismina, who join in some sectors with the canals of Tortuguero. This is characterized as a spawning of sea turtles.
In this area are concentrated myriad of beautiful beaches, localized, particularly in the south. Some are kept within protected area with small paths that lead to the heart of the rainforest.
Totuguero
Tortuguero National Park is located in north-eastern Costa Rica. This is one of the most famous parks at the international level, and for good reasons, besides being one of the most important locations for nesting turtles Lora , Leatherbacks and other, this ecosystem is as diverse as nature itself.
